Enjoying working at home and all the flexibility it offers must not be confused with trying to please everybody and succumbing to every distraction known to man. In order to increase your productivity, it is important to run your business like a business, and not like a hobby that you do after rolling out of bed.

First of all, do away with wearing pajamas to work. Whoever said that you can wear anything in such a situation must be committed to a mental institution. What you wear reflects the way you are feeling, to a large extent. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should wear a suit around your house unless, of course, your clients are coming to your home office for appointments. What we are trying to prove here is that productivity is congruent to the choice of clothing for the work environment, and wearing your bedtime clothes is conducive to bedtime rather than business time. Shower in the morning, put on some clothes that do not have jumping sheep on them, and sit down at your desk feeling like a professional.

Next, think about the time you do your work as a schedule that you need to plan out. If you find that you are planning your work around doing everyone else’s dirty work, then you are not dedicating yourself to your job. And when we say regimented schedule, we mean regimented; schedule everything from the time you wake up, your exact work hours and your break schedule as well. Make sure that the time scheduled for work is fairly uninterrupted. You may want to invest in another phone line for your home, or move your home office spot as far away as possible from the television, your kids’ bedrooms (especially if you have older kids with a fancy for extremely loud, cacophonous ‘music’) or other distractions.

The last thing you have to ensure would be that everybody you work with is aware of your schedule and what it entails. You might receive a lot of calls from old friends or family inviting you to coffee or lunch, but if you were working nine-to-five, can you afford such a luxury or would it get you in trouble with the boss? If you want to schedule time for leisure, then do so on your days off from work; do this and you will likely be earning more and gaining more respect among your peers.
